Westmeath Hunter Trials

Westmeath farmer’s son Paul Gibson–Brabazon of Rathconrath beat more than a hundred rivals when galloping away with the Glanbia Novice Singles competition at the hugely popular Westmeath hunter trials at Annaharvey Farm, Tullamore, on Sunday. (March 14)
Paul rode a hunter owned by Mrs Ann Murtagh and produced by David McCormack, and it was making its first competitive appearance. Horse and rider produced the only sub–four–minute round in the class over Sam Deverell’s course that was received with enthusiastic acclaim throughout the day.
The pair beat Phidelma Elvin by 20 seconds with Michelle Nelson a further nine seconds behind. Only one second behind her, three riders tied for fourth place, Simon Day, Eleanor Waldron and Harrison Badger.
Rider John Reidy made a profitable journey from Mitchelstown in Co Cork to win the Wines Direct/Ashe Equestrian Open Pairs and to tie for the Wax Museum/Coolatore House Open Singles with Brian Horohoe from Roscommon, who also took third. Local youngster Monty Badger finished fourth just ahead of Charlie Maguire of the Westmeath Harriers. The maestro of Grouse Lodge and Coolatore House in Westmeath as well as the Wax Museum and Button Factory in Dublin, Paddy Dunning, enjoyed his first ride in a hunter trial during the day.
In the Open pairs John Reidy teamed up with Debbie Cody to score from South Westmeath Harriers pair Geraldine Buggy and Fiona Harris, with another pair from South Westmeath, Denise Kelly and Tommy Cleary in third.
The Kieran Guinness Pre–Novice Pairs is always popular. Judged on an undisclosed optimum time, it was won by Liddy and Faye Nolan from Amanda Flynn and Caroline Clear, with a tie for third place between Anne Brogan and Lorlie Higgins and local youngsters Malcolm and Vanessa Finnan.
