Annaharvey Newsletter - October 2009

Well winter has arrived with a bang here in Ireland– we have gone from glorious autumnal days and amazing colours in the woods and hedgerows to wind and rain and dark days – the time changes this weekend gone past – something some of us forgot about thereby getting done out of the coveted hour extra in the bed!!! Anyway it is taking a bit of getting used to again, as the afternoons are very short with darkness threatening from 3.00pm onwards.

On Sunday last we probably made a little bit of history in our local parish church when we had a double christening – both Maeve and Lucy were welcomed into the church family and did it with aplomb – neither passed any remarks on having their heads soaked with water and were model babies! Afterwards we had a large family party back in Annaharvey and everyone had a great time – so nice to get together for a celebration like this and trebly nice with 3 sets of Grandparents + 1 set of Great Grandparents in attendance.

The horses are still out at night for the moment but all have their rugs on – I hate that as they are so yucky to put on when they get wet but we’ll just have to get used to it as there are a good few months ahead of us. Paddy is still out of work with his broken ankle and Jenna has taken a few months off so we are very busy keeping everything up to scratch – Evelyn Brown whom many of you have met on and off over the years is working in the yard and is a great help to Sam – she will be with us till Christmas.

We have had 2 very successful Hunter Trials over the past few weeks with good weather and good attendance so great time was had by all – the Mini, Midi/Maxi league has just started as well which is great fun for all our regular clients along with our international competitors – last week Tilda from Sweden came 2nd in the Maxi under Henry’s supervision!! This week Sandra from Germany will be competing along with more Swedish and UK visitors, so we have an exciting night ahead of us.

We have plans to develop a caravan and camping site on the farm hopefully for next year which will be an  interesting project – it will take time to get planning and all the other red tape dealt with, but we are looking forward to yet another challenge, though this time around it is very much Sam and Aaron who will be dealing with the problems!!

We have reopened the Farm Food shop on Saturday mornings with all our usual homemade breads and caked etc. and we are looking forward to the Christmas trade – we are also doing 2 cookery demonstrations on the 11th and 25th November which hopefully everyone will enjoy – there has been a very good interest in the demonstrations so it is something we will be doing again in the spring.

That’s about it for now,
best wishes to all,
Lynda, Henry and family.
