On Sunday July 5th Annaharvey Riding Club hosted a One Day Event at Annaharvey Farm Equestrian Centre, Tullamore, Co. Offaly. With record entries received a total of one hundred and seventy six horses were due to compete throughout the day, which kick started with the six dressage arenas commencing at 9am.
Irish Horse Feeds suppliers of a wide range of horse feeds sponsored both sections of the advanced primary competition. In Section One it was Fiona Dunne of the Nuenna Farm Riding Club who took the lead in the dressage with a score of 31.1, closely followed by Shelley Keary of Borus Riding Club on a score of 34.7 and Maeve Mooney of Moy Summerhill Riding Club on a score of 35.3. Clear rounds over the coloured poles meant the pressure was on all of the competitors to stay clear as they set out over the cross country course. The top six remained the same and it was Fiona Dunne who took home the red ribbon.
In Section two of the Irish Horse Feeds sponsored advanced primary things were a lot tighter at the finish with first and second finishing on a score of 30.5 but it was Ruth Masterson from Littlehill Riding Club finishing closer to the time allowed at cross country that won the class. After dressage it was Orlaith Frawley from Broadmeadow’s Riding Club that led with a score of 28.4, with fellow member Sharon Ferrari in close second on a score of 28.9. Third place was held jointly by the eventual winner and Jackie Dow of Borus Riding Club on a score of 30.5. After show jumping things had changed slightly with Orlaith’s horse Father Dougal having a pole down in the show jumping which dropped them to their eventual finishing place of fourth. So it was Sharon on Kayleigh Grey who led the field of competitors across country. Unfortunately Sharon did not have a clean sheet out in the country which dropped them down the field. Clear rounds from Ruth and Jackie left them level on a score of 30.5 and it was Ruth with the slower time that was closer to the time allowed that won the Irish Horse Feeds sponsored advanced primary section two and finishing third was Ashwood’s Susan Black on 31.1.
Annaharvey Farm sponsored the first section of the intermediate competition and yet again the cross country course consisting of a wide variety of jumps including two water fences that proved influential to the eventual line up of the class. After dressage it was Michael Moore of Ashbrook Riding Club and Suzanne McGee of Littlehill Riding Club that took joint lead on a very impressive score of 17.1, followed in third place by Bernie Foley from Cheval Riding Club and fourth place was held by Leslie Fitzgerald of Mosstown Riding Club on a score of 21.8. Two poles down show jumping dropped Suzanne out of the top three with Bernie Foley, Sharon O‘Connor from Ashwood on a score of 22.9, Chris Tuthill from Moyglare Riding Club on 23.5 and Lorraine Costello of Dalysgrove Riding Club on 25.3 all keeping clean sheets over the coloured poles keeping the pressure on Michael Moore. Again it proved that all of the disciplines in a one day event are important and with problems cross country Michael dropped down the leader board. A clear round left Bernie Foley a narrow lead of 2.3 penalties that won at the end of the day with Sharon finishing second on Pikeur 22.9 ,Chris finishing third on Superman’s Flight 23.5 and Lorraine finishing fourth on Corlina 25.3 all climbing the score board with clear rounds show jumping and cross country.
Section two of the Intermediate competition sponsored by Midland Legal Solicitors also proved a very nail biting class for the competitors with only a penalty of 0.6 dividing the top two competitors out of the dressage arena with Brigid McCarroll of Hollybrook on 25.3 and Bevin Grant of Waterford making the long trip up worth while on a score of 25.9. Celbridge Riding Club’s David O’Brien lay in third place after the dressage phase with a score of 27.6 on Glandoran Blue Boy with John Gavin lying a close fourth place on 28.0 representing Ashbrook on FCD Touch of Class. With problems cross country that left Brigid McCarroll well out of the running and clear rounds from the others over the fences meant that it was Waterford’s Bevin Grant who took over the lead and remained in front to take the class on her dressage score of 25.9, David in second on 27.6, John on 28.0 and Karen Jameson slotting into fourth place for Newcastle Lyon’s Riding Club on Dutch Diva on 28.8.
The young horse class sponsored by the Express Shop in Ballinagar, Co. Offaly who kindly provided us with supplies to keep our judges and volunteers happy saw twelve horses come under the judges eye for the dressage and it was Waterford’s Johnny Widger that led the field out of the dressage phase on a score of 28.2 with Ashbrook’s Jenny Doran in second place on Horseplay Yogi Bear on a score of 32.3 and Kilrainy’s Aisling Carter on A.C.E Bank Raider in third place on 32.9. A pole down show jumping and a slow cross country round dropped Horseplay Yogi Bear out of contention and A.C.E Bank Raider getting eliminated out in the country left the door open for Newcastle Lyon’s member James O’Haire on Peters Lady to climb to eventual second with clean jumping sheets on a score of 34.1 and third place was taken by Meath’s Virginia English on Chavez with a score of 34.1 again the closest to the time allowed proving influential separating second and third.
The Advanced Intermediate class which was kindly sponsored by Exspartise Ltd. suppliers of domestic appliance spare parts proved a very competitive class. Leading the twenty four competitors out of the dressage phase was the eventual winner Jill Fogarty a member of Cheval Riding Club on a score of 30.4, closely followed in second and third place on a score of 30.9 were Newcastle Lyon’s member Heidi Doyle and Slieve Bloom‘s John Joe Grace. The next phase this class tackled was the cross country and with the top three going clear it was going to be down to the last phase over the coloured poles. Jill Fogarty kept her nerve with a good clear round kept her lead to win this class. Both Heidi and John Joe had four penalties coming out of the show jumping which allowed Castle Leslie’s Dawn Clerkin to slot into second place on 34.1 with Heidi closest to the time allowed finishing third and John Joe in fourth place.
In the open class which was sponsored by Call4IT which provides computer services for individuals and companies it was Melissa O’Connor who led the field out of the dressage with a score of 28.1 on Ashwood Bouncer clear cross country but with twelve penalties out of the show jumping arena dropped her to third place. In overall second place was James O’Haire on his dressage score of 32.9 riding Portability. The winner of this class was Ashbrook’s Jenny Doran who rode HorsePlay Jamboree finishing closest to the time allowed across country on her dressage score of 32.9.
