Annaharvey Newsletter - April 2009
Welcome to Annaharvey in the Spring. The birds are singing and the trees are starting to show a hint of green – after a long and unexpectedly cold winter it is a welcome relief, not least to the horses who are now out in the paddocks at night and some have even been relieved of their rugs, so summer is definitely on the way.
We have been really busy over the past few weeks with a number of events taking place – on St Patrick’s Day, our national holiday, when everything and everyone turns green we held our first Hunter Trials of the season. The weather was brilliant, bright and clear with warm sunshine and a great crowd came from far and wide to compete – it was wonderful to see everyone in such great humour after the continuous feed of depressing information about ours and the world’s economy over the past few months – on St. Patrick’s Day there was no recession in Ireland!!
Last weekend we held our 2nd Trials, a bitter cold day but dry and again a great crowd came, while we also had Cosmos – a conference run by the local Astronomers Club – we had a number of eminent speakers – one of them attached to the Vatican, which almost compares to the year we had the Russian astronauts speaking! There is one sure thing about Annaharvey – no two days are ever the same, and we can never complain of being bored!
On Sunday last also Tullamore Rugby club qualified for the final of the Towns Cup a competition which every country club aspires to winning and as Aaron was on the team we of course were watching the match with great enthusiasm– last time they won the competition was 3 years ago and the excitement was amazing and nerve wracking all rolled into one so it is exciting to be back there again – the final is the Sunday after Easter and half of Tullamore will be there to cheer them on! Rory will be sorry not to be here in the thick of it but will be cheering them on from Minneapolis.
We are running with some new ideas for this year –one of them is an "Over 55’s" activity break which will incorporate walking, painting and cooking over 3 days, so are looking forward to seeing how that plans out – also we have developed allotments on the farm that people can rent to grow their own vegetables – with the present economic climate it is extraordinary how everyone is looking to the past to see their way forward!
Henry and Aaron have been sowing corn over the past week and are working on new drainage on one of the fields across the road that has wet spots in it – they have been very busy laying concrete around the back of the indoor arena and have lots of plans for more of that type of work in the weeks ahead if the weather stays good. We need to get painting done on the stables and generally around the yard so busy times ahead!
We are looking forward to the summer coming and new guests arriving along with some old ones – by which of course we mean repeat guests!! It is nice to have people staying again it brings a different element to our lives after the quiet of winter.
Well that’s about all the news form here for the present.
Best wishes for now and a Happy Easter
Lynda and family
