Annaharvey News - August 2008
Hi there, well we are officially declaring summer over – after more rain than even Henry – the Elder Lemon in this establishment, can ever remember falling and subsequently flooding areas of the farm never seen before!! All our clients have been extremely patient and understanding and been happy to take advantage of what land we could get out on – with the one exception of an extremely irate man who seemed to think we had deliberately arranged to sabotage the cross–country!!!
That being said, looking back on the highlights of the past few months, we did actually get some good weather – the sun shone for our One Day event in May, for my Dad’s 80th birthday party which we had outside/inside our own home, for the Connemara Show in July, also Geashill Parish BBQ, not unfortunately for Tullamore Show which had to be cancelled again at the last minute, but did shine again for my Mum’s 80th Birthday picnic which we had in Powerscourt waterfall in Co. Wicklow at the end of August, so all in all it wasn’t all bad!
We have had some great camps this year, with young people from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland and Sweden, and have thoroughly enjoyed looking after them here. Also of course we have had many old and new guests staying from all over the world and we have appreciated their business.
We are struggling to get the corn cut these days although we are probably luckier than most with approx half the fields cut – all we need is a few fine days and we will be able to get the rest done, along with the baling of the straw which is of course very important or the horses will have a chilly winter!!
Rory , Joanna and Katie have left for the States and we all miss them but Katie in particular is missed with her big smile for everyone human and animal alike – however it is lovely to see the photos Jo has on her Bebo site of all of them swimming and playing in warm water with the sun shining on them like a proper summer!!
Henry and I hope to go and visit them in the autumn when things settle down and the house gets quiet, but before it gets too cold in Minneapolis where they are living.
Sam and Aisling have been off to a few events lately as has Paddy with Wilma, she is flying these days and Paddy is having a ball with her – he gives us a blow by blow account every Monday of their exploits!
We had a busy weekend just before Rory and Jo left with all our extended chickens coming home to roost – Yanni from Sweden arrived for the weekend, along with Viola just back from Australia, Evelyn Brown down from the north where she is for the summer – they all went out on a hack with Jo along with all the other girls working and past workers followed by a night out in town. The following night we had a group of Rory’s college, school and rugby friends here for a party along with extended family as you can imagine a great time was had by all – including Katie the star of the show!
Shortly now all our summer staff will be leaving for school and college, and we will be back just to Paddy and Jenna in the yard and the rest of the family filling in the blanks – it always seems strange for the first week or two as there are so few to be fed at lunch time – we usually cook way too much for the first few days!!
We have moved the Tack shop down near the indoor arena now and it is working very well – Jenna now has a new office space and is also able to sell hats, boots, back protectors etc. to anyone needing them, a move prompted by Jo’s exit to the States! Rachael is also happy as she has extra space for her food business and a nice entrance for business clients.
Well that’s all the news from Annaharvey – hopefully by the time of the next newsletter we will have the harvest finished, and the sheds full of straw for the winter.
Kindest regards
Lynda and Co.
